Roguefort: A turn-based tower defense roguelike game
Roguefort is a turn-based tower defence survival game with ASCII graphics. Defend your hearth and survive 20 nights against increasingly difficult waves of enemies.
Harvest, build, plan, and manage your way to victory in this challenging tiny game. The world is procedurally generated with biomes, rivers, and resource clusters, so each run plays differently, as it should.
If you like tower defense games, turn-based strategy, and/or traditional roguelikes then you’ll probably enjoy this. And, yes, I’ve become aware that roquefort is a type of cheese…
How to Play
During the day, gather resources by walking up to trees, rocks, and gold deposits and whacking them. Use what you collect to build walls, turrets, traps, and recruit allies and workers. Workers will automatically gather resources for you, but you need farms to support them. When the sun sets, enemies raid from one or more directions and you have to survive until dawn. Each night gets harder - more enemies, tougher types, attacks from multiple directions.
Tips
- Get a turret down near your hearth ASAP
- Watchtowers extend the range of nearby turrets
- Standing on your hearth during the day heals you slowly
- Spike walls deal damage back to attackers
- Inspect stuff to see what it is
Controls
WASD or arrow keys to move. Number keys 1-6 to switch between build categories. Click or tap to interact with things. Other than that, there's a lot of standard traditional roguelike type key bindings and controls - I hope that it somehow makes sense.
About
This game started as a little summer project with my nephew Will. I'm just the code monkey - all the credit goes to him! I hope you enjoy Roguefort and I’d love to hear your comments and suggestions for further development.

Cool idea! It's a bit hard for me, but it's not the game's fault 😂
hey thanks so much! I’m actually remaking it and will release in the coming months so hopefully it’s more balanced and fun!
I finished the game! I really enjoyed it. I have some feedback:
In build mode, we can build using both mouse clicks and the WASD keys. However, since WASD doesn't support diagonal input, I find myself clicking to build diagonally anyway. If we’re already clicking for diagonals, it might be easier if building was just click-based.
If building becomes click-based, the WASD keys could be used for movement even in build mode. This would make building feel a lot smoother. Also, I think it would be helpful if we could build things you can stand on (like traps) right at our feet.
Anyway, thank you for making such a great game!
Hey @SunnyWardGames, thank you so much for the feedback - I really appreciate that! I'm glad you enjoyed the game. It's so amazing to me that I can make a little world and others can enjoy it and discover all this stuff I never thought of or imagined. I will be doing a big update on the game today so I will put your feedback into it! Thank you so much and I would be super grateful for a rating if you have the time or capacity.
Very cool game — however, I can't read any of the upgrade options without zooming in, even in full screen. Also, for the future: I'd love to see an app or offline version! I could play this all day on my phone lol
hey, thanks so much, I appreciate that! Thanks also for the feedback. Sorry about the readability issues - it has a few teething issues. I’ve uploaded a new version with hopefully a fix for the text size. Is that any better on your mobile device?
I was desktop, actually! lol But yes, the changes have made a huge difference!! Thank you!
awesome to hear that and thank you for letting me know about the graphics issues
P.S. please leave a review if you have the time and capacity! I hope that others can enjoy it too but it's hard to get visibility
Neat!! Gonna show this to my little kid :) keep it up my man, you're on a roll!
oh hey, thanks so much Jose! Even on holidays I can’t get away from some ascii fun. I hope your little one has fun!
